Man Arrested for Reckless Driving, Public Intoxication
BARBOUR COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A camping trip took a turn on Friday, May 9, when deputies responded to reports of a reckless driver at Audra State Park Campground in Barbour County, leading to the arrest of a heavily intoxicated man.
Around 9:54 a.m., Deputy C. Curkendall arrived at the campground after receiving complaints that a driver was speeding through the park, going the wrong way down one-way roads. The posted speed limit in the area is 15 mph.
A park employee directed the deputy to a black Mazda with visible side damage parked at campsite #38. The vehicle matched the description from the initial report. The alleged driver, identified as Jamie Michael Cutright, was located at campsite #47, sitting in a tent and appearing heavily intoxicated.
According to the report, Cutright smelled of alcohol and was so impaired he struggled to put on his shoes. When questioned, he admitted to driving the wrong way and said he had run off the road. He also admitted to drinking, responding with “too much” when asked how much alcohol he had consumed.
Although alcohol is prohibited in West Virginia state parks, Cutright gave conflicting statements about where he had been drinking and denied having alcohol in the tent. When Deputy Curkendall attempted to detain him, Cutright resisted by pulling his arm away before being subdued.
Cutright also repeatedly refused to identify himself and was ultimately identified by jail staff at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail (TVRJ).
He is facing charges related to reckless driving, public intoxication, resisting arrest, and failure to identify himself to law enforcement.
