Live turtle shortage spurs shake-up for the 33rd annual Turtle Derby
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The “slowest two minutes in sports” is scheduled to kick off Saturday with the 33rd annual Turtle Derby.
This year, the races will be ran a little different due to a shortage of live red-eared slider turtles. Instead, attendees will be able to wager on a number on a giant turtle wheel for a chance to win big.
The tradition will also feature family-friendly games and the famous fried chicken dinners.
The Turtle Derby is hosted every year by the Little Sisters of the Poor and raises funds to provide care for low-income residents at St. Joseph’s Home.
People interested in getting involved before the event on Saturday can donate non-perishable groceries, toy prizes, individual soft drinks or bottled water, and homemade cakes for the Cake Wheel.
All contributions may be delivered to St. Joseph’s Home, 15 Audubon Plaza Drive, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
