South Minneapolis Mass Shooting: Authorities Investigate Targeted Shooting, James Ortley Arrested

South Minneapolis Shooting – A major breakthrough has been made in the South Minneapolis mass shooting that occurred on Tuesday night, April 29, 2025.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed the arrest of 34-year-old James Ortley, the primary suspect in the violent incident that claimed three lives and left two others injured.

Ortley is facing multiple counts of second-degree murder and serious federal charges related to firearms. The shooting unfolded in the Midtown Phillips neighborhood, where police responded to reports of gunfire just before midnight.

Upon arrival, officers discovered five victims—a 20-year-old woman, a 27-year-old man, and a 17-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene, while a 28-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were transported to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.

Chief O’Hara emphasized that this was not a random act of violence, stating, “The individual in custody was known to at least one of the people involved. This was a targeted act, not an indiscriminate shooting.” Authorities believe additional individuals may have been involved and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Ortley was arrested on Thursday, May 1, 2025, around 3:30 p.m., on the 1600 block of South 4th Street, following a search warrant executed by U.S. Marshals. The FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office SWAT Team also assisted in the operation.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the arrest a “major step forward”, stating, “It sends a clear message: violence and harm will not be tolerated in our city.”

Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with police pursuing leads that suggest gang-related motives. The shooting was among several fatal incidents reported in Minneapolis within a 24-hour period, raising concerns about escalating violence in the city.
