After nearly 18 years, the remains of Jeff Surtel, a teenager from Mission, B.C., who went missing in 2007, have been identified, bringing closure to his family.
Jeff’s parents, Gary and Dawn Surtel, shared the news on social media on March 6, confirming that DNA testing identified the remains as their son’s. According to them, it is believed that he passed away on or shortly after April 29, 2007, the day he disappeared. While the circumstances of his disappearance remain unknown, they expressed relief at finally having answers.
At the time of his disappearance, Jeff was 17 years old. He had left his home around midnight on a bicycle and was reported missing shortly after. His case remained under investigation by Mission RCMP, and in 2023, a volunteer from the organization Please Bring Me Home, which focuses on solving cold cases, also began looking into it.
His family has announced that a memorial service will be planned for loved ones at a later date. They also expressed gratitude for the support they have received over the years.
