Fatal Inglewood shooting death of Juan Sanchez – Obituary

Juan “Johnny” Sanchez, 48, was fatally shot while attempting to stop thieves from stealing a catalytic converter in Inglewood.

Authorities reported that the incident took place around 3:22 a.m. on February 25 in the 1000 block of North Chester Avenue. Sanchez confronted two individuals attempting to remove the catalytic converter from a neighbor’s vehicle when one of the suspects shot him in the chest. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Inglewood Police Department launched an investigation, reviewing surveillance footage that showed the suspects fleeing in a gold Toyota Camry with tinted windows and a sunroof. Community members provided key information that aided detectives in identifying the individuals involved.

On Thursday evening, police arrested 40-year-old Wilver Alberto Rabanales and Jose Christian Saravia Sanchez at a motel in Cudahy. Rabanales is being held on a $2 million bail, with a scheduled court appearance on Monday. Details about Saravia Sanchez’s bail and court hearing were not immediately available.

Sanchez’s family described him as a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather who was always willing to help others. A GoFundMe campaign in his memory has raised over $44,500.

Catalytic converter thefts have become a growing concern in Southern California due to the valuable metals contained within the devices. Law enforcement agencies have introduced measures such as engraving unique identification numbers on converters to deter theft.

Authorities continue to investigate and encourage anyone with further information to come forward.
